From Malta to Brussels. From tradition to virtuosity. One stage, two exceptional soloists, and a night illuminated by extraordinary music.

On the evening of 22 November, the historic Salon Elisabeth at Corinthia Brussels sets the stage for Night of Stars, an exceptional musical encounter featuring the De Valette Chamber Orchestra and internationally acclaimed artists.

Under the musical direction of Carmine Lauri, the orchestra is joined by celebrated violist Timothy Ridout, appearing as DVCO Artist-in-Residence. Renowned for his expressive depth, rich sound and captivating musicianship, Ridout is one of the most distinctive violists of his generation.

Night of Stars brings together outstanding artistry, the elegance of this historic setting and the intimacy of chamber music - a beautiful and inspiring evening at Corinthia Brussels.

Programme

The evening opens with the lyrical beauty of Bruch’s Romance, where the viola’s warm, expressive voice unfolds with tenderness and restrained passion.

 

The journey then turns to the Mediterranean with Joseph Vella’s Rapsodija Maltija “Maltese Rhapsody”, a vibrant celebration of Malta’s cultural identity. Drawing on traditional Maltese melodies, Vella brings the colours and spirit of the islands vividly to life through the solo violin.

 

The programme culminates in the youthful brilliance of Mendelssohn’s String Octet, written when he was just sixteen, an exhilarating masterpiece of soaring melodies, dazzling imagination and virtuosity.

 

  Throughout Night of Stars, the De Valette Chamber Orchestra, joined by distinguished soloists Carmine Lauri and Timothy Ridout as soloists, illuminate the  the extraordinary range of the strings, from Bruch’s tenderness and Vella’s Mediterranean spirit to the thrilling fire of Mendelssohn.

Timothy Ridout

Timothy Ridout is one of today's leading violists, acclaimed for his distinctive sound, expressive depth and compelling musicianship. 

 A sought-after soloist and chamber musician, Timothy has performed with major international orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with distinguished conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle and Sir Mark Elder.

A winner of the Lionel Tertis Viola Competition, the Opus Klassik and a Gramophone Award, the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Young Artist,  a former BBC New Generation Artist, Ridout appears regularly at prestigious venues and festivals across Europe. Timothy Ridout is Artist-in-Residence with the De Valette Chamber Orchestra.

Carmine Lauri

Carmine Lauri is Music Director and Concertmaster of the De Valette Chamber Orchestra. Carmine has served as co-leader and leader of the London Symphony Orchestra for the past 25 years.

As a long-time member of the LSO, Carmine led the orchestra under distinguished conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Antonio Pappano and Gianandrea Noseda, just to name a few.

Carmine has earned worldwide recognition, having also led the LSO in countless film soundtracks, including Harry Potter, Star Wars and the recent film Maestro.

He has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic, Brno Philharmonic, the Orquesta Municipal de Caracas, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Oxford Philharmonic and the Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra in Mexico.

Carmine is one of the foremost musical ambassadors of his native Malta, which, in recognition of the name he has made for his country as a world-class violinist and soloist, bestowed upon him the Honour of Member of the Order of Merit (M.O.M.).

He was elected both Associate and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London in recognition of his achievements and distinguished career.

The De Valette Chamber Orchestra (DVCO) represents Malta’s cultural heritage and contemporary European spirit, bringing together exceptional musicians from leading ensembles across Europe.

 

Led by Music Director and Concertmaster Carmine Lauri, Concertmaster and Principal Emeritus of the London Symphony Orchestra, the DVCO is committed to the highest standards of artistic excellence. 

 

Its Artist-in-Residence programme fosters lasting collaborations with internationally acclaimed musicians; for the 2026/27 season, the Orchestra welcomes British violist Timothy Ridout, a Gramophone Award-winning artist.

 

From Malta to the international stage, the DVCO celebrates the transformative power of live performance and the idea that artistic excellence knows no borders.
