Whether you’re interested in music, film, fashion or performing arts, there’s so much to discover in Malta. Join us as we unearth what makes the sun-baked archipelago the arts capital of the Mediterranean Sea.

Music In Malta

Malta is fast becoming an international music hub. From rock, pop and jazz to the Maltese folk sounds of Għana (pronounced ‘ana’), the island’s musical offerings are wonderfully diverse. Festivals are a major part of the island’s appeal and popular events such as Malta International Music Festival and Malta Jazz Festival attract performers and visitors from around the world.

However, it’s not only international talents that get the spotlight. Malta is home to a surplus of rising stars across many musical genres, who are following in the footsteps of internationally acclaimed Maltese talents such as opera tenor Joseph Calleja and pop singer Chiara.

Malta Film Industry

With stunning scenery and historical sites, Malta is one of Europe’s most versatile filming locations. The island has already been used as a backdrop in major blockbusters such as The Da Vinci Code, Midnight Express and World War Z, but it was when the crew of Games of Thrones descended on the island that the buzz around the Malta film industry exploded among the international community.

The island is also a hotbed of home-grown talents, and you can catch many of them in action at the Valletta Film Festival, an annual event showcasing and celebrating filmmakers from the archipelago and the region.

Malta Fashion Scene

Island life may be relaxed but it’s certainly stylish. Malta may not have the high fashion scene of European capitals like Milan and Paris but the locals love to shop and dress up. Over the past few years, the fashion scene has evolved dramatically. On the retail side, fine boutiques are breeding grounds of international and local labels. Charles & Ron, for instance, is one of the leading Malta fashion houses and is known for its distinctively Mediterranean designs which showcase an edge of Maltese flair. To discover the myriad designers making waves in the fashion scene, head down to the annual Malta Fashion Week and see the latest local designs on the catwalk.

Performing Arts

Performing arts are another genre that’s flourishing across the island. Discover Malta’s theatres and discover dance troupes and theatre companies pushing the boundaries of theatre and dance. Each summer, the most exciting performances are brought to the Malta International Arts Festival. Spearheaded by the Arts Council Malta, the annual event offers a platform for emerging and established talents to showcase their art. It also hosts masterclasses to encourage and develop talents – a mission that the council is devoted to all year round.
