From vintage furniture to collectable antiques, these markets in Lisbon are treasure troves of shopping potential

Paris, London, Milan – these cities may be known for their luxury wares, but in Lisbon it’s more about heritage and craftsmanship than designer labels. This is a great place to shop for antiques and vintage items, the best of which can be found in flea markets across the city. From quirky fashion accessories at LX Market and collectable antiques at Avenida Da Liberdade to handmade Portuguese products at Feira da Ladra, these markets in Lisbon have everything you need and more.

Avenida Da Liberdade Antique Market

Collectors of rare and high-end antiques should make a beeline for the antique market on Avenida da Liberdade, hosted by many of Lisbon’s best-known and respected antiques sellers. The market’s wares may be on the pricey side but they’re guaranteed to be authentic and of premium quality. In fact, you’re unlikely to find better antiques anywhere else in the city. It’s held on the second weekend of every month, so plan your trip accordingly.

Feira Da Ladra

For prices that are a steal, head to Feira da Ladra, known as thieves market. The popular flea market, which takes place every Tuesday and Saturday at Campo de Santa Clara, is the place to go for second hand goods. A stone’s throw from the São Vicente da Fora Church, the historic covered market brings together traders specialising in antiques, vintage clothing, household items and handicrafts. The atmosphere is electric and haggling is expected, so start practising your negotiating skills.

Mercado Crafts & Design Market

Taking place in the beautiful landscaped garden of Jardim da Estrela, this crafts and design market is one of the most picturesque in the city. Open on the first weekend of every month (except in January), it’s more a meeting place for Lisbon’s creative community than a standard retail spot. As well as shopping for handicrafts and alternative souvenirs (many of which are handmade by Portuguese artisans), shoppers can enjoy live music and cultural shows, hosted for free as part of the market experience.

Belém Antiques And Crafts Market

Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month the gardens of Jerónimos Monastery are taken over by the Belém Antiques and Crafts Market. Combine sightseeing with shopping by visiting the historic church and then passing by the open-air market. It’s dedicated predominantly to antiques, with traders showcasing everything from old books and records to collectable coins and stamps, and even vintage photography equipment – seller Carlos Nunes claims to have cameras formerly owned by spies.

LX Market

Located in a former factory, the LX Market is a hotbed of creativity and young talent. Taking place every Sunday, the hip market blends traditional and contemporary arts and crafts in a distinctive setting. From art, fashion and jewellery by up-and-coming Portuguese artists and designers, to second hand wares and vintage furniture, there’s plenty to discover.
