Twenty-three years of dedication
An interview with Gabor Toth, Bell Team Supervisor at Corinthia Budapest
What began as a role became a lifelong passion for Mr Gabor Toth. Since joining Corinthia Budapest in 2002, Gabor has become a familiar and trusted face, evolving from porter to Bell Team Supervisor and remaining a steady presence as the hotel transformed around him. With a quiet dedication and a deep understanding of what makes guests feel at home, he has helped shape countless first impressions. We spoke with Gabor about the early days, the joy of morning shifts and the moments - and guests - that have made his journey unforgettable.

Do you remember your very first day?
Absolutely. It was an orientation day, with more than 200 of us starting together. We played icebreakers, listened to a speech about the hotel’s past and future and felt part of something exciting. Two days later, the doors opened to our first guests. The hotel wasn’t fully ready yet, we had to use small maps to find the rooms because the numbers weren’t up... but the guests were delighted. That day taught me that great service doesn’t need perfection, just heart and teamwork.
What brought you to Corinthia, and what made you stay?
I visited the building in the early 90s as a hospitality student, and even in its worn state, the Royal Hotel impressed me. Years later, I saw it was reopening as Corinthia Budapest. I didn’t know then that I’d still be here 23 years later, but I stayed because of the people. I’ve worked through fires, renovations, COVID and I’ve seen the hotel evolve in so many ways. But what has never changed is the atmosphere - the sense of family among colleagues.

A guest story you’ll never forget?
There are many, but the Nilssons, a couple who stayed with us for over 15 years are unforgettable. Once, we surprised them at the airport with flowers and a live band hidden in the boot of our car! Even after Mr Nilsson passed, his wife still visited the hotel. In many ways, we had become her second family.
What advice would you give to someone just starting in hospitality?
Do your job with humility and passion. Be honest, be open and don’t lose your sense of humour. I always tell new colleagues not to worry... it’s only the first ten years that are hard!

Favourite place in the hotel?
The entrance. I love standing near the lobby and watching first time guests walk in. That moment when they stop, look around and realise how beautiful this place is. I never get tired of that.
One word to describe Corinthia Budapest?
I need two: impressive and royal. Because that’s what it is. Majestic but full of warmth.
Longevity in hospitality isn’t just impressive - it’s inspiring. Gabor Toth’s story is not about standing still but about growing with grace, leading with kindness and finding quiet joy in the details. For more than two decades, he’s been part of what makes Corinthia Budapest not only a beautiful hotel, but a genuinely special place to work, to stay and to return to.
