While winter in Prague is charming, summer is when the city really comes into its own. As temperatures soar, so does the events scene. An exciting series of world-class music, dance and film festivals kicks off with Prague Proms in June, while celebrations such as Pivo na Náplavce and Prague Folklore Days give visitors the opportunity to experience the local hospitality and heritage. With a busy calendar to look forward to, here are some of our favourite events in Prague this summer.
Kicking off the summer events season with a celebration of classical music, Prague Proms presents a programme of concerts by some of the world’s greatest singers and musicians, in iconic venue's across the city.
If live bands, good food and Czech beer sounds like the perfect way to spend a summer’s day, head down to Pivo na Náplavce, one of Prague’s best beer festivals. As well as sampling local brews like Clock, Falkon and Zemský, visitors can also browse the farmer’s market and enjoy live music.
Tanec Praha is an international festival of contemporary dance and movement theatre. Putting the Czech Republic on the cultural map, the festival presents a progressive programme of dance and theatre performances across the capital, before moving on to other cities around the country.
United Islands of Prague is the largest open-air music festival in Prague. Multiple stages are set up across the city, hosting local and international bands, singers and DJs. With myriad genres catered to, there’s something to suit every music lover.
Bohemia Jazz Fest is a free music festival for jazz enthusiasts, hosted across the country’s most beautiful town squares. The festival launches with two days of concerts at Prague’s Old Town Square, before setting off on a tour of other major cities across the Czech Republic. Expect performances by local talents and international acts from as far afield as the USA.
The biggest folk dance and music event in central Europe, Prague Folklore Days celebrates the country’s folk heritage. It’s a great opportunity to learn about traditional folk life, while enjoying cultural performances and a colourful parade through the city centre.
Summer Shakespeare Festival is one of the longest running annual events in Prague. It has been hosted since the early 1990s to celebrate the playwright with a calendar of Shakespearean productions at theatres and castles across the city. With around 150 shows taking place over the summer, don’t miss the opportunity to re-live some of your favourite Shakespeare plays.
