With the New Year comes a fresh wave of restaurant openings to excite and entice gourmands. From top chefs like Clare Smyth and Claude Bosi making a home in London to international launches such as Bala Baya and Palatino, 2017 is set to be a fantastic year for the city’s culinary scene. With so much on offer, make it a resolution to tick off as many of these new restaurants in London as possible.
Recognisable to many as a judge on MasterChef Professionals, Monica Galetti is determined to prove herself as far more than a TV personality. The New Zealand chef, who cut her teeth at French restaurant Le Gavroche, is preparing to open her first restaurant in London, Mere. The two-storey restaurant and bar in Fitzrovia, which is a joint partnership with her sommelier husband David Galetti, will serve seasonal cuisine alongside innovative cocktails.
Opening: January 2017, Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia.
Claude Bosi, famed for his two Michelin star restaurant Hibiscus, is back in London with a new venture, Claude Bosi at Bibendum. Taking over Bibendum at the iconic Michelin House, the new-look restaurant will focus on seafood. There’ll also be a sophisticated cocktail bar and a formal dining room for those who prefer a more opulent dining experience. Bosi will be collaborating with renowned ‘restaurant King’ Sir Terence Conran.
Opening: Spring 2017, Michelin House, South Kensington.
After more than a decade in the kitchen of triple Michelin star eatery Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Clare Smyth is branching out on her own to launch the Clare Smyth Restaurant. The northern Irish Chef, who’s earned an MBE for her work, is set to make her new venue just as grand as her previous place of work, with a bar and five dining rooms in the heart of Notting Hill.
Opening: April 2017, Kensington Park Road, Notting Hill.
One of the most anticipated new restaurants in London in 2017 will be Bala Baya, an Israeli eatery by Eran Tibi. Diners can look forward to a colourful selection of Middle Eastern dishes inspired by Tibi’s mother’s cooking, such as salt-baked salmon with tahini, and hot homemade pitta bread stuffed with slow-cooked meats. Bala Baya will also be home to London’s first Gazoz bar. Gazoz is a traditional sparkling Middle Eastern soft drink, which mixologists will blend into exotic flavoured cocktails.

For a taste of Italy, don’t miss Stevie Parle’s newest London joint, the Roman-inspired Palatino. Taking inspiration from Italian cooking, chefs will serve a combination of traditional dishes, more modern, upscale plates and, of course, fresh pizza and pasta – both of which are freshly made on-site every day. There’s also an excellent wine cellar stocked with Italian wines, including some extra special rare vintages.
