Christmas On Stage

From childhood favourites and must-see musicals to dazzling dance performances, London certainly lives up to its stellar reputation for stage productions over the festive period. Until 7 January, journey from the North Pole to the heart of New York City with one of the world’s favourite festive characters in ELF The Musical. For Christmas with a Country twist, head to the Southbank Centre between 8 December and 8 January for Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol. For those who prefer ballet over ballads, The Nutcracker returns to the Royal Opera House from 6 December to 14 January for an enchanting retelling of this classic tale. 

Family Fun

What better way to entertain the kids than with a pair of skates on one of the city’s most famous ice rinks? Skate at Somerset House is back and bigger than ever, complete with contemporary tunes, festive foodie treats and a 40ft Christmas tree. One of our favourite festive activities in London, you’ll be able to practice your axels from 16 November until 15 January. Discover why Hamleys is considered “the finest toy shop in the world” with a visit to Santa’s Grotto in their Regent Street store. From 26 November, animal lovers can delight in a variety of festive activities at ZSL London Zoo, from Christmas-themed talks and animal crafts to meet and greets with Santa himself. 

Explore the Outdoors

If you’re looking for a luxurious Christmas activity in London, a Shire Horse Carriage Ride through one of the city’s iconic parks will certainly tick the box. Nibble mince pies and sip sloe gin as regal Shire horses draw your private carriage through Richmond Park. Christmas at Kew returns for another year, inviting guests to journey through twinkling tunnels and along tree-lined paths lit up in every colour. Make sure to stop for a warming festive treat along your way.

Celebrating their 15th year, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is one of the most iconic Christmas activities in London. Get your fix of fairground rides and food stalls, explore the Magical Ice Kingdom and soak up stunning views from The Giant Wheel. You won’t want to miss the displays around Covent Garden, Carnaby Street and Regent Street.

Witness the wizarding world in all of its wintry glory at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter. Get up close and personal with costumes, props and sets, decorated just as they appeared in the iconic films. A Christmas tree-lined Great Hall, cosy Gryffindor Common Room and snowy Forbidden Forest await. Whether you’re more ‘Love Actually’ or ‘The Grinch’, London has plenty of pop-up cinemas to satisfy your festive film cravings. From 4 November, Backyard Cinema has something for almost every day of the week.

With the River Thames as your backdrop, discover pop-up food stalls, live entertainment and art exhibitions galore at the Southbank Centre this festive season. Sweet stocking fillers, crafts and tasty treats can also be found at Christmas markets in Kingston, Greenwich and Kings Cross.
