With its sprawling parks, historic monuments and surfeit of excellent restaurants, Prague is an obvious choice for loved up couples searching for a bit of old world romance. This is especially true on Valentine’s Day, when the February air is still crisp, there’s the chance of snow and, with the summer crowds still months away, you can truly make the city your own. Now, with the atmospheric setting sorted, you need to decide how you’re going to spend the perfect Valentine’s Day in Prague. From champagne-fuelled breakfasts and gift shopping in the Lesser Town, to a promenade across the Charles Bridge and a Michelin-starred dinner at La Degustation, here’s how to spend a romantic Valentine’s Day in Prague.
Breakfast at Café Lounge
Begin your Valentine’s Day in Prague with a decadent breakfast at Café Lounge. This art nouveau-style café in the Lesser Town is a favourite among locals, with an excellent breakfast and brunch menu. Opt for speciality coffees and pancakes, and, seeing as it’s a special occasion, a glass of champagne is only right, right? We like the look of the Pierre Gerbais Cuveé de Réserve. Just be sure to book ahead.
Romantic stroll through Petřín Park
Suitably fortified, and perhaps a little tipsy, take a short walk to Ujezd Street, also in the Lesser Town, to catch the funicular. Pull close for warmth as it rattles through the park, to the top of Petrin Hill. Once at the summit, lovers can enjoy sublime views across the city from the Lookout Tower. Indeed, the tower was based on that other romantic icon, the Eiffel Tower. On the way back down, be sure to take in the monument to the Czech-born Romantic poet, Karel Macha. Reciting a section of his epic poem “Máj” in the original Czech is entirely optional.
Linger on the Charles Bridge
After stopping for a bite to eat at Piano Nobile in Petrin Park, it’s time to track down that special Valentine’s gift. The main shopping district can be found in the Old Town on the other side of the river, which means an excuse to walk across that famous Prague landmark, the Charles Bridge. Lined with 30 Baroque statues, this 14th century crossing joins the Old Town with the Lesser Town and offers exceptional views of Prague and the Vltava River, particularly as the sun begins to set.
Go shopping in the Old Town
Generally, boutiques and smaller, more individual shops are clustered around the streets near Wenceslas Square. However, the leafy (and aptly named) Paris Street will probably be your destination if your tastes run to international designers. Oh, and a little hint: Prague is famous for its garnets, and you’ll find no shortage of jewellers stocking pieces made with these semi-precious stones.
Dinner at La Degustation Boheme Bourgeoise
Valentine’s Day in Prague wouldn’t be complete without a romantic dinner, and we heartily recommend booking a table for two at La Degustation Boheme Bourgeoise. Located in the Old Town, the Michelin starred restaurant has a menu inspired by 19th century Czech dishes and offers an 11-course tasting menu with wine pairings. Perfect for that Valentine’s splurge. Finally, head to the cosy hangout Bar and Books, where high-end libations will fuel you well into the early hours – what better way to round off your Valentine’s Day?
