The World Heritage Belem Tower is the city's most photographed landmark and along with the marvellous Jeronimos Monastery; built in memory of Vasco de Gama’s successful journey to India, should top your list of must-see monuments.

The historic Alfama district, below the Castelo de São Jorge, is a maze of medieval streets offering incredible views from three of the seven hills of Lisbon. The best way to get there is by tram from Baixa.

With parts dating back to the 5th century, the Moorish-built Lisbon Castle is a top attraction both for its colourful history and its sensational views.

Two funiculars provide transport up the city’s steep hills; don’t miss the ruins of the 14th century Carmo Monastery when you get to the top.
