Park Eduardo VII

Casa dos Bicos (16th Century)
So named after the diamond shaped stones that cover its façade. Note the Italian influences in the architecture combined with elements of the Portuguese Manueline style. The building belonged to Afonso de Albuquerque, Viceroy of India, and is the site of a number of Roman archaeological finds.

Church and Monastery of São Vicente de Fora.
One of the most imposing and notable religious monuments in the city. It was built immediately after the city was recaptured from the Moors following a vow made by King Afonso Henriques to São Vicente during the siege of the Lisbon in 1143. This sixteenth century church and monastery with a Renaissance façade has in its cloisters a series of interesting Portuguese tile (azulejo) panels inspired by La Fontaine’s fables.

Jerónimos Monastery.
Built of white stone and facing the River Tagus, Jerónimos Monastery is one of Lisboa’s greatest historic landmarks. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, the originally named Saint Mary of Belém Monastery was built in the 16th century on the orders of King D. Manuel I, as a home for the monks of St. Jeronimo’s order and serve as a pantheon for the royal dynasty of this Portuguese king.
The Monastery houses the tombs of Kings D. Manuel I, D. João III, D. Sebastião and D. Henrique, as well as those of seafarer Vasco da Gama and writers Luís Vaz de Camões, Alexandre Herculano and Fernando Pessoa, three of the most important names of Portuguese literature. The Archaeology Museum is housed in an extension built in 1850. The Maritime Museum is located on the west wing.

Torre de Belém.
The Tower of Belém was built in an effort to defend the estuary of the river Tagus. King Dom João II (1455-1495) had wanted to ban hostile ships from the river, but it was only his successor Dom Manuel I (1469-1521) who ended up building the tower. It was designed by architect and sculptor Francisco Arruda, with notable traces of Moorish influence. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
