The Rolex Middle Sea Race
Witness a true spectacle of sail in Malta
Founded in 1968 as a result of friendly rivalry between a group of keen sailors, the Rolex Middle Sea Race is a high-octane offshore adventure. The 34th Edition of the race attracted entrants from 16 nations including Great Britain, France, Germany and of course Malta, each team eager to battle it out across the demanding 606 nautical mile course to be crowned the overall winner. From their starting point at the Grand Harbour in Valletta on 19th October, the yachts raced along the east coast of Sicily, up through the Straits of Messina and towards the volcanic island of Stromboli before heading south past the ancient islands of Pantelleria and Lampedusa, eventually returning to Malta. Out of the 99 yachts that entered the Race, the Italian yacht B2 crossed the finish line on Tuesday 22nd October, a little over three days after the starting gun, and claimed victory over the largest and most competitive fleets in the race’s 45-year history.
This spectacle of sail may be over for this year, but stay with Corinthia Hotel St George's Bay and a wealth of alternative ocean activites and underwater exploration awaits you.
